Shaver Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Shaver?
A Shaver is anyone who shaves their head with an electric razor with no guard or donates 10 inches of braided hair.
How do I register?
We strongly encourage online registration so you can collect and track your online donations. If you cannot register online, you may register the day of the event.
The registration fee is $25 for those 18 and under, and $40 for those 19 and over. Raising $25/$40 in pledges waives the registration fee.
Please note your registration fee is not tax deductible if you choose to pay your registration fee in lieu of fundraising the minimum amount.
Do I have to shave in public?
Absolutely not. You can have a Solo Shave in your bathroom if you want! Feel free to collect pledges from your family and friends for your own event, visit your own stylist or shave alone, and help the cause. If registering online, choose Solo when selecting your location and choose a week you think you'll do it, and simply let us know when and where you will be shaving so we can get your toque in the mail.
Remember to request and wear an I'm Shaving for the Brave! badge to help your promotion and fundraising efforts!
Those wishing to organize a Shave at their school or office should visit the Head Hunters section of this website.
What is the difference between a school shaver, a community shaver, and a solo shaver?
School Shavers are students who register to shave at their school Shave event.
Community Shavers are members of the general public who register to shave at a community event (i.e. your local mall). Check our News section of the site regularly to get updates on schools, businesses, and communities holding their own Shaves.
Anyone who would like to visit their own stylist and collect pledges from family and friends for their own private event can still register and help the cause as a Solo Shaver. If registering online, choose Solo when selecting your location, choose a week, and simply let us know where you will be shaving so we can get you your toque.
What is the Bravest School Banner?
The Bravest School Banner is awarded each year to the school with the highest percentage of students Shaved.
It doesn't matter how much money was raised, as long as every student meets the registration fee. We divide the number of Shavers by the number of students and the school with the biggest number wins!
You can see who's leading for this year on the Bravest School Leaderboard page.
What do I do on event day?
Your role is to show up with clean hair, your completed offline pledge sheet and any cash or cheques collected, a friend or two along to watch you, and sit in a chair while we shave your head.
In what condition should hair be for a donation?
A donation should consist of at least 10 inches, must be clean and braided, and minimally processed (no bleaching or perms). Donations of hair are sent to Continental Hair who makes cost-free wigs for children with hair loss issues.
How do I raise money?
We strongly encourage online registration so you can collect and track your donations online. You will be able to send emails to friends, family, and co-workers for support.
You may also download a pledge sheet. This form is for OFFLINE donations only. Please do not record your ONLINE donations here. Make as many copies as you need. Remember to bring all of your physical pledges along with your fully completed pledge sheet(s) on the day of the event!
Your donors may also call us at 1-877-571-7325 to give by VISA or Mastercard, or they may mail a cheque (payable to Young Adult Cancer Canada) to: Shave for the Brave, YACC, 18 Argyle Street, St. John's, NL, A1A 1V3.
How do I find out who donated on my behalf online?
Online registrants will receive an email when someone donates on your behalf. This way, you will get a chance to thank anyone who donated to you, and bug anyone who hasn’t!
Where does the money go?
All funds raised during the Shave for the Brave go directly toward supporting our programs for young adult cancer survivors such as Retreat Yourself; the annual Survivor Conference; We Get It; and Goaltender.
Donations allow us to offer these programs at no cost to the young adults that truly need them.
For more information on Young Adult Cancer Canada and our finances, check out our Annual Report.
Where do I drop off donations I have received?
If you are a School or Office Shaver, please bring your donations to your school or business on the day of your shave where your Head Hunter (Shave organizer) will collect them before you go under the clippers.
Community Shavers should bring their donations on the day of the community event.
Others can drop off your pledges at our office during office hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30-5). Just give us a call first at 1-877-571-7325.
Obviously, if you're not in St. John's, we'll coordinate another way to deliver the money. Call us and we'll figure out the best option.
