How to be a Shaver

To be a Shaver, you must shave your head with an electric razor without a guard or donate at least 10 inches of non-bleached and non-permed hair in a ponytail which will be used for wigs for children. You can shave with a bunch of friends at a Community, School, or Office Shave, or go solo at home; it’s up to you. A shorn head is a shorn head.
Check out the Locations section to see what’s going on in your area.
Last year, more than 1,500 incredible Shavers and a slew of generous donors raised over $500,000 which allowed us to provide more support programs for young adults with cancer than we ever have before.
Don’t run to the barbershop yet; there’s a tiny bit of work to do before you’re cleared to don that bright yellow toque.
Registration
The first step is to register. If at all possible (and I imagine it is since you’re reading our website), register online. This makes it very easy to collect money and setting up your fundraising page is kind of fun. You can log in, write a little about why you wanted to get involved, see what was pledged so far, and stick a link on your social media sites to get donors without even trying. Your donors can log on, pledge, learn a little about you and why you’re shaving, and feel good without having to track you down.
If you can’t register online or you prefer to have a printed pledge sheet, contact us or your Head Hunter for a manual registration form and offline pledge sheet. You can also get your offline pledge sheet here.
If you're Shaving at a larger Community Shave, registration will be done at the event.
There is a $25 registration fee for people under 18 and a $40 fee for those 19 and above. Your registration fee is waived when you raise more than $25/$40.
Spread the word
Just let us know if you want an “I’m Shaving for the Brave!” badge after you register. The physical button will let people know you’re participating and might get you some donations without opening your mouth. There’s also a digital badge to use on your social media sites. It looks the same and will undoubtedly direct people to your participant profile.
Now, since you’ll likely get asked, why do we Shave for the Brave?
7,000 Canadians between the ages of 15 and 39 will get diagnosed with cancer this year. That’s about 19 a day.
Life is different when you're a young adult; it makes sense for it to be different with cancer, too. Young Adult Cancer Canada is the country's only organization concentrated on the young adult population on the national level. Think your grandpa’s friends want to talk about fertility, cultivating a career, maintaining friendships and relationships, building financial security, or starting a family? They have kids and grandkids, and they have retired to their vacation homes and have different things to talk about. Young adults need to talk to young adults. That’s what our programs offer and the incredible amount of money the Shave raises goes a long way in funding those programs.
We’re not raising money to swim in it like Scrooge McDuck, lease swanky office space, or film expensive commercials. Our efforts revolve around helping young adults make the rest of their lives the best of their lives. They have a lot of living left to do and cancer can cause a deep, dark void. We want to encourage positivity, hope, and inspiration by confronting the issues head on, not hiding from them.
Thank you for your support.
