Mackenzie Bingle decided he wanted to grow his hair out and shave his MASSIVE "caucasian 'fro" to benefit people with cancer. He and his father, Perry, contacted us in March with fantastic plans already in place.

Mackenzie was organizing the Shave at his school, Elwood Regional High School, and inviting the community to get involved as well. On April 15, 15 Shavers (8 students and 7 members of the public) got a little bit balder.

After losing all that hair, Mackenzie said he felt "very different" and gave a special shout out to Heather LeQuant since they both raised over $1,500 each!

Humber Valley M.H.A. Darryl Kelly also Shaved and raised over $670 himself! On April 21, he presented a Ministerial Statement in the House of Assembly about Mackenzie's initiative and the Shave for the Brave. We appreciate all the support and acknowledgement we recieve, especially when it means the government is being exposed to the challenges young adults with cancer face.

At the end of the day, they were $77 shy of $5,000. Mackenzie said, "One of my friends went to his uncle and said we need $77 and he gave $100 so were over $5,000!" As of press time, the Bingle's efforts in Deer Lake have resulted in $5,579 for Young Adult Cancer Canada!

Thank you so much to Perry and Mackenzie for taking the initiative and getting everything organized before even knew you were Shaving! We'd also like to thank Elwood Regional High School for hosting the event, and Mr. Kelly and all the shavers for helping us help young adult cancer survivors!

One hair can bear a load of 100 grams (about the weight of a chocolate bar). If a person’s scalp was strong enough, a head of hair could hold 10-15 tonnes!
