Students are kicking butt at Cowan Heights Elementary!

We previously told the story of Lorna Walters and her history with the Shave for the Brave. We were delighted to follow up with Cowan Heights Elementary and went back to see the school's first Shave for the Brave on March 18, 2011.

Ms. Walters kicked off the event by telling the students about her past Shave experiences, and her relationship with Philip, her student who died from cancer. Then, Geoff Eaton spoke to the kids about the impact Shaving for the Brave has on the lives of young adult cancer survivors (and, sorry to the little boy who thought we helped the less-fortunate, we're trying to save one world at a time!).

Kinderstarter Tyler Hayley and his dad were the first two called to the barbershop at the front of the gym. After a very long time, Tyler's lovely mop of curls was gone and he went around high-fiving the other kids. Good thing those third-graders petitioned for the younger grades too!

Student Assistant Ms. Jennie Murphy, ESL teacher Mrs. Cathy Anstey, and substitute Mr. Brian Nolan were the other adults who sat amongst the students to Shave.

At the end of the day 19 students and four adults raised about $8,000! Unbeliveable!

The morning was capped off with a lovely moment when a woman named Deborah came up to Geoff and said, "I just wanted to shake your hand. You inspire me, you inspire everyone." She later told us she had just attended her brother's funeral; he also lost his battle with cancer.

Thank you to all the students, staff, parents, and everyone else at Cowan Heights Elementary who made our job a breeze that day, and we can't wait to see what you do next year!
