Instant karma at the Janeway

On Friday, October 7, staff from the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s, NL Shaved for the Brave in support of Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC). Coincidentally, the Shave took place as 12 young adult cancer survivors participated in Retreat Yourself Adventure, based in Rocky Harbour, NL.
Jordan Bishop was one of those participants. Despite being diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2010 at age 19, older than the typical Janeway cutoff, his medical team determined Jordan was best treated at the children’s hospital.
“I was often 10-15 years older than most of the other patients,” said Jordan, now at his second professionally-facilitated YACC event. “I often felt isolated. YACC provides amazing programs which allow young adult cancer survivors to connect with others. I can’t even describe the difference that made in my life.”
Head Hunter and Shaver Kathryn Nichol decided she wanted to Shave in memory of her family members who had battled with cancer in the past, two of whom were young adults. Kathryn’s sister, Michelle Parrrell, not only supported her by attending the event, she also raised money and Shaved with her sister!
“Shaving for the Brave is something my sister, Michelle, and I had talked about doing for quite some years,” said Nichol. “Our team, The Janeway Braves, are delighted that we had this opportunity. It was an awesome experience that we’ll never forget.”
Janeway staff members Blair Stockley and Jimmy Lacey also got in on the action. Jimmy decided he was going to participate just that morning and raised over $300 in 40 minutes by making the rounds to his colleagues. Coworkers, friends, and family members gathered around the Ship Stage on Friday afternoon to cheer on and support the four Shavers who raised over $2,700 together.
Big thanks to all the Shavers and staff at the Janeway for their support, and to hairstylist Joy Short for giving the Shavers a top notch hair cut!
